Geography
Bee
The Geo Bee is open to 4th-8th graders and a good majority
of the contest is multiple choice. There will be one overall winner
in
this competition who will have an opportunity to complete a qualifying test
for a chance to advance to the State Level of the competition. We will
also be holding a Junior Geo Bee as well for 3rd graders and younger
so they get an opportunity to "see what it's all about". The
children in
the Jr Bee are not eligible for advancement because of their grade
level but it's a great experience "to get their feet wet". For
more
information about the Geo Bee, you can visit
www.nationalgeographic.com and click on the Geo Bee links. There is even
a
weekly quiz you can take and a study corner on the site.
Reader's
Digest National Word Power Challenge
This is a vocabulary contest open to 4th-8th graders. It is a multiple
choice
competition in which the child may miss two questions before falling
out of the competition. There will be five winners in this
contest......the over all winner for each grade--4th through 8th. The 4th and
5th grade winners will have an opportunity to take a qualifying test to see
their
placement among other students in the state and win books for their
home library. The 6th-8th grade winners will also take a qualifying test,
but they will have a chance to advance to the State Level of the
Competition. Last year, our 4th grader winner tied with two other students
for the
highest score in the state and all of our 6th-8th grade winners advanced
to the State Level with our 8th grade winner going one step farther to
the National Competition in Orlando, Florida! For more information
about the Word Power Challenge and to view practice questions, you can visit:

Science Fair
The purpose of the BHEA Science Fair is to promote a positive, competitive environment in which participants demonstrate their understanding of the Scientific Method through written and verbal presentation of their projects. The first step to participating in the Science Fair is to choose a topic. Please keep in mind that you must present an investigation in order to be considered for judging at the BHEA Science Fair. Demonstrations will be accepted at the science fair, but will not be judged. When choosing a topic for the BHEA Science Fair, please use common sense. Above all, safety is
our number one concern for all involved so certain topics would not be accepted in the BHEA Science Fair...
Suggestions to get started and guidelines are posted here
The Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee is open to 3rd-8th graders. The top two winners will
advance to
the SMHEA Spelling Bee. The winner of the SMHEA
Bee will advance to theRegional Bee which is held at UT.
The Paideia study
booklet has been discontinued and Scripps Howard now
offers an interactive
study booklet, Spell It! (Merriam-Webster). Spell It! offers 701
words divided into categories based primarily on language of origin. In
each section, there are
also challenge words and exercises to help you apply the spelling
knowledge you gain. You may obtain a copy now through your local newspaper
sponsor or through their online store.
For more information about
the Spelling Bee, you can visit www.spellingbee.com. There are lots of
study tips on the site. We (Knoxville Kids Club) will also be having
two practice bees......one in December and one in January so the kids
can
get used
to the way
it works.
